Birkenstock have been around for 200 years. The family run business was created by Johann Adam Birkenstock in the small German village of Langenberg.

In 1902 Johan’s grandson Konrad created flexible arch support for factory made shoes, which by 1925 were being exported to France, Italy, Austria, Holland and Switzerland. With medical backing promoting their shoes in 1947, they had a book published entitled ‘Birkenstocks Podiatry’ which was the most widely read book on foot health of its time.

By 1990 new lines Tatami and Papillio were launched and in 2004 Birkenstock received the Draper’s award for “Footwear Brand of the Year” in England for their pleasing designs suitible for all age groups.
